Books for Beginners

Following along with our theme of "A Very Good Place to Start" here are a some book suggestions for young readers just starting out. Now that my dog is a reading therapy dog--

Ha! Actually, this dog goes to schools and libraries so children can read to her. They have an audience who doesn't care if they say "wah-bit" or if they stammer or if they chose to leave a word out. Coriander listens patiently. I am only allowed to help if asked.
So, while doing this, I've had the joy of getting re-acquainted with beginner books. Much to my surprise and delight, many of the books from past time are still favorites.

The "Frog and Toad" series revolves around the gentle friendship between the two main characters. The illustrations are charming and smoothly guide the new reader along.

"Henry and Mudge" a series by Cynthia Rylant are stories about Henry and his big sloppy dog, Mudge. The illustrations are very child-friendly.

This next book is by far the very most favorite of young readers at the library. They love to show Coriander the pictures and ask her what she thinks. Biscuit is always getting into trouble, and again, with clear illustrations and a furry hero, this series get four woofs from Coriander.

Any one of these three is a good choice for a child just starting out, because we want young readers to become great readers!

  1. Your dog is adorable (and a good sport!) We have a therapy dog visit our elementary school, too, to 'listen' to the kids read. It's such a wonderful program. Those are all excellent series. Kids seem to like the Clifford books, too!
